Sweet CHAIRity, Sweet
Success
On Thursday October
7, 2004 the dreams of 25 children came alive when the San Francisco
Design Center, Design Trade Resource Association, and 25 Bay
Area designers came together to present and auction off their
one-of-a-kind chairs for the Child Abuse Prevention Society (CAPS).
Raising over $50,000, Sweet CHAIRity was a sweet success.
Among some of the twenty-five chairs designed for the event
sat the very cool "Home Run Chair" designed by team
De Andre Smith (age 5) and Danielle Schneeloch of Danielle
Designs, San Francisco. Adorned with the entire Oakland A's
team's autographs, this chair hit a home run with a winning
bid of $950.
With no surprise, "Shakespeare's Chair" stole the
attention of the audience with a $1,100 winning bid. Designer
Kathy Coomer from Art Pie created an incredibly exquisite,
hand painted scene depicting the famous Shakespeare play
A Midsummer Night's Dream. The chair featured bronze bugs for
its feet.
Another very popular chair, "The Indian Women Chair," named
after the elegant fabric with beaded trim used to upholster
the chair, was auctioned off for $1,500. According to designer
Laura Hunt, the fabric also inspired Adrian (age 18) to
write a poem about the unrecognized lives that some women lead.
For her $2,100 auction price design, Natalia Mauro (age
5) thought up a whir of magic gold dust and secret velvet
hiding
spots in the "Harry Potter Chair." Her design
partners Harry C. Polos and Daniel Gonzalez of Gold Dust
Designs,
San Francisco, brought Natalia's imaginative ideas into
reality. This chair was so authentic it seemed to come
with a complimentary
house elf, hiding under the invisibility cloak.
But the grand prize for the most money raised to benefit
CAPS went to "Choyrilla the Gorilla" by design
team, Alan Choy (age 6) and Ana Marie Delgado of Delgado
Design. The two
put together a big, soft, loving banana-eater that stole
the stage at $2,500.
The chairs—which were designed by a team of one child,
who had previously benefited from CAPS, and a professional
interior
designer—reflected not only the whimsical, bright colors
of the small creative designers, but also the intricate
work and
ethereal materials of the sponsoring showrooms, upholsterers,
metal fabricators, and other craftspeople.
Honorary event chair Ann Getty donated two matching child-sized
chairs from her Ann Getty Home collection for the auction,
which were quickly snatched up by the grandmother of twin
girls.
Also showing support, Bay Area media personalities Susan
Blake of KRON and John Rothman of KGO Radio lit up the
stage with
great enthusiasm when hosting the festive evening. PaperCity
magazine was this year's media partner.
All proceeds from Sweet CHAIRity benefit
the Child Abuse Prevention Society, a nonprofit organization
whose work
supports child
abuse prevention services in San Francisco.

One-of-a-kind Dream Chairs
At SFDC’s Sweet CHAIRity Auction
A Benefit for The Child Abuse
Prevention Society
6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, October 7
Galleria Atrium, San Francisco Design Center
101 Henry Adams (near 8th and Townsend Streets)
San Francisco
Looking for a dream
chair to complement your décor? Perhaps a dragon chair
with wrap-around wings or a chair of reflection with its own
rear-view mirrors for hindsight will fill the bill. Maybe your
family room needs a weather chair complete with the sun, moon,
stars and a rainbow over the sea. And what house could possibly
be finished without the Green Slime Chair, the Curiosity Chair
or a bit of Cheetah Passion?
Look no further. These and 15 other fanciful chairs will be auctioned at Sweet
CHAIRity from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, to benefit
the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Society (CAPS). The gala auction is
presented by the Design Trade Resource Association (DTRA) and the San Francisco
Design Center (SFDC) in cooperation with media partner PaperCity.
The chairs were each designed by a team consisting of a child whose family
has benefited from CAPS and a professional interior designer. The children
and the designers created the concepts for their whimsical chairs at a special
event in June. Then the designers enlisted their sponsor showrooms, upholsterers,
metal fabricators and other craftspeople to make the children’s design
dreams come true by professionally manufacturing the chairs.
Bay Area media personalities Susan Blake and John Rothmann will host the festive
evening, and honorary event chair Ann Getty is donating two chairs from her
Ann Getty Home collection for the auction.
Tickets for Sweet CHAIRity are $50 ($60 at the door). For
event and ticket information, call 415-905-4599 or visit www.sweetchairity.org.
Proceeds from Sweet CHAIRity benefit the Child Abuse

Designing A Dream
Paves the Way for Sweet CHAIRity
The event
was named Designing A Dream, and
dream they did.
Twenty children

designers
from around
the Bay Area, pulled together plans for the Green Slime chair, the Curiosity
Chair, the Weather Chair, Cheetah Passion, the Little Secret Cool Dragon
and the Chair of Reflection—which comes complete with
its own rear-view mirrors for hindsight.
These and 15
other fanciful chairs will be professionally manufactured,
courtesy
of sponsoring showrooms, upholsterers, metal fabricators and other craftspeople,
and then sold during Sweet CHAIRity, a benefit auction presented by the
Design Trade Resource Association (DTRA) and the San Francisco
Design Center (SFDC)
as a benefit for CAPS.

CHAIRity takes place at SFDC’s Galleria
from 6 to 9 p.m. on October 7th. Tickets are $50 thru October 1 ($60

Sweet CHAIRity Auction Raises $70,000 for CAPS
(The Child Abuse Prevention Society)
At $2,600 the "Home Run Chair" signed by SF Giants Damon Minor, Tim
Worrell, Russ Ortiz, Ryan Jensen, Jay Witasick and Robb Nen hit a home run, and
at $4,200 the "Spiderman Chair" scaled the heights during Sweet
CHAIRity, a benefit auction for the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention
Society (CAPS)
presented by the Design Trade Resource Association (DTRA) and the San Francisco
Design Center (SFDC) at SFDC's Galleria on October 10th.
But the winning chair of the evening was "True's 9/11 Chair," an
anti-terrorism art statement that was bought by an anonymous donor for $10,000.
These chairs were just three of 30 unique, individually designed and manufactured
chairs that were auctioned during Sweet CHAIRity. One could find the "Betsy
Ross Chair," a proud rendition of the American flag with sequined stars
on iridescent red and blue silk; “The Artist’s Chair,” with
Matisse-like images of nature on a traditional wing-backed chair; “Natural
Plaid,” a surrealistic garden chair with faux vines and flower-pot legs,
or “Jupiter B2K,” a meteoric metallic space ship complete with
flashing lights.
The chairs were each designed by a team consisting of a child whose family
has benefited from the work of the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center
and
a professional interior designer. The children and the designers put the
ideas for their whimsical chairs together using crayons, pencils, pens, paper
and
fabric at a special event in June. Then the designers' work began as they
called upon
their sponsoring showrooms, upholsterers, metal fabricators and other craftspeople
for assistance in making the children’s design dreams come true.
Bay Area media personalities Sydnie Kohara and John Rothmann hosted the festive
evening. Since the playoffs were in full swing on Thursday evening, guest and
CAPS supporter Delia Ehrlich kept John and Sydnie apprised of the score at strategic
moments, which kept both spirits and bids high.
Proceeds from Sweet CHAIRity benefit the Child Abuse Prevention Society,
a nonprofit organization whose work supports child abuse prevention services
in San Francisco. Also
